HOLMEN, Carl Olsen, b. 16 Jun 1872, Thon, Modum Parish, Buskerud County, Norway , d. 23 Sep 1914, Waldo, Lake Co., Minnesota (Age 42 years) |

19 Jul 1914 |
Braaten, Konnerud under Skoger Parish, Buskerud County, Norway |
- Carl took a homestead northwest of Washburn, WI, but he never built there. In 1917 he returned to Norway to marry one of his cousins. His original choice refused his offer, but anxious to travel to the U.S., Borghild, at 19 and the youngest of 12 children, was willing. They married in Norway in July, 1914, and travelled to the U.S. in 05 August, 1914.
Carl's promise of a farm turned out to be poor land on a hillside. They did not seem to live on the farm, but rather in Two Harbors.
In December or Janary, their bull got loose and Carl went chasing it. He died of a heart attack, leaving Borghild penniless and very pregnant. Their child, Ruth Holmen, was born sometime between April and September, 1915, either in Two Harbors, or at Superior, WI, where Borghild later made her living working as a housekeeper.
Ruth was boarded out while Borghild worked. Borghild was late making ayments, and the family taking care of Ruth seems to have taken the child in place of the payments. Ruth was never heard from again.

Notes |
- Borghild, the twelfth of twelve siblings, was born in a town called Konnerud, which is located about 6 miles southwest of Drammen. Konnerud had a church. Drammen is probably the head parish for Konnerud, and began collecting records in 1677. Drammen and Konnerud are in the County of Buskerud. Drammen is located about 48 miles southwest of Oslo. Oslo, however, is in the County of Akershus.
When Borghild was 19, her cousin Carl Holmen, returned from America to marry one of her older sisters. The sister refused to have anything to do with Carl. Borghild, wanting to get to the U.S., was willing to marry. The marriage took
place in Konnerud, in July, 1914. On 5 Aug, 1914, Carl and her travelled to the U.S..
Although Carl had taken a homestead northwest of Washburn, WI, they settled in Two Harbors, MN. Within six months, Carl died of a heart attack while chasing a cow, leaving Borghild pregnant. She had a girl, Ruth Holmen, sometime between April and September, 1915. Borghild moved to Superior, WI, to earn her keep as a housekeeper. Ruth was boarded out.
Within two years, Borghild met Carl Evald ANDERSON, and planned on marriage. Carl liked little Ruth. Somehow, Borghild got behind on her boarding fees for Ruth, and the family taking care of her claimed they had a right to the girl in lieu of the fees. During the night, they took off, supposedly to California, with Ruth. She was never heard of again.
