- John Harrison, born in Crawford County, Wisconsin. By 1880 his family had moved to Vernon County, just north of Crawford County. It is not known just when he moved to Chicago, sometime after 1880.
Maggie came to the U.S. by herself, paying for steerage. She had long dark hair and was fearful of the stories she heard about people being sent back home when lice was found in their hair when checked in New York. She worked downtown Chicago in the tea room at Marshall Field's. When she wanted to marry John Harrison, his family was against the marriage due to her being an immigrant, and he supposedly a descendent of DAR on his mother's side (which is untrue). Maggie continued to work after marriage, and saved enough to pay for a trip back to Ireland shortly before her mother died.
John and Maggie were married at St. Pius V Church, at 18th or 19th and Ashland, Chicago. Bishop Muldoon (before he was made a bishop) presided over the wedding. John worked at the Chicago stock yards for Amour Company.
In 1900, John and Maggie lived at 4537 Union Avenue. By 1910, they bought a house at 47th and Halsted (832 West 47th Place) for a payment of $1 every Monday night for a total of $1000. In 1920, they were still living there. About 1932 they moved to 6436 Stewart Avenue.
Catherine and Alice were both baptised at St. Pius V, and witnesses wer
for Catherine - Edward Devitt and Alice Harrison (John's sister)
for Alice - Edward Gannon and Ellen (McDevitt) Gannon
Both John and Maggie, and their fourth child, are buried at Mount Olivet Cemetery located at 111th south and California Street.
