Notes |
- The History of Crawford and Richland Counties, published in 1884, records that Martin Finley came in 1857. Later he moved to Iowa, where he died. His father, Timothy Finley, who came about that date was still a resident of the town in 1884.
Martin Finley fought in the Civil War. He was living in Mount Sterling when he enlisted on September 25, 1861, according to the service record found online. He was mustered out on September 16, 1864.
Martin Finley is listed on the 1880 Census in Clayton County. The 1884-1885 Iowa Gazetteer and Business Directory is now online at ancestry.com. Martin P. Finley, son of Timothy and Mary (O'Neill), is listed as a saloonkeeper, in Sanborn, O'Brien County, Iowa. There is also a brief bio of Martin in the 1897 History of O'Brien County, Iowa. He ended up in Cerro Gordo, running a rooming house in Mason City.
