The Downey name possibly originated from Scotland and Ireland, having spellings such as Downey, Downie, Downy, Maclldowney, MacDownie, MacDowney and O'Downey. This site tells us that the Downey name probably originated in Dalriiada in ancient Scotland in the Barony of Duny or Downy, which was also called Douney in 1331. Many Downies are found in the towns in this region of Scotland. Downie is an ancient name found even before the Norman invasion.
