In England the Dawney family seems to be a minor nobile family and a coulpe of the ansesters were Sheriffs of Yorkshire. The Downey name possibly originated from Scotland and Ireland, having spellings such as Downey, Downie, Downy, Maclldowney, MacDownie, MacDowney and O'Downey. There is a site with this info http://www.houseofnames.com/xq/asp.fc/qx/downey-family-crest.htm.
