Dolores served in the Coast Guard during World War II, enlisting on July 9, 1943 and receiving an honorable discharge on August 27, 1945. She started as an Apprentice Seaman, and moved up to Seaman 2nd class, Storekeeper 3rd class, and finally Storekeeper 2nd class.

Andy married Dolores while in the service. After seven years in the Navy, he and Dolores moved to Chicago and Andy went to work with Ryerson Steel Company at 16th and Rockwell, Chicago's near South side, as a mechanical engineer.

Andy suffered from high blood pressure and glocoma in his forties, and had his first of many heart attacks at 52. He had a stroke around 53, and died of another heart attack at 54 while returning from driving his son, Robert, to college in Champaign, Illinois. • Notes
    • After Fred's death, after his nine-month long hospice care at the apartment in 'Ford City', Chicago, Dolores moved to an assisted living place, Tolentine on Olympia Fields. Being a former seminary, the 'rooms' were just two 'cells' with a shared bath area. However, in 2004, the nuns who ran the place lost their lease and everyone had to leave. Dolores moved to the Franciscan Village in Lemont, IL, in June, 2004, to a much more spacious one bedroom apartment. Lemont looks almost like a picture postcard town and the 'village' includes lots of rolling greens for walking. Late in 2013 she moved from independent living to dependent living at Franciscan Village.

On May 7, 2014, Dolores participated in an Honor Flight to Washington, DC. This was one day after her 91st birthday.
