Notes |
Married:
- The Fordens and Harrisons lived across the street from each other in Chicago, at 832 47th Street and 833 47th Street respectively. Charles Forden and Catherine Harrison married at St. Gabriel's Church at 4522 S. Wallace Street, Chicago. The wedding was witnessed by Christopher Coyne and Catherine's aunt, Helen Harrison.
The 1920 census shows the Forden's living at 825 West 47th Place, Chicago (one or two houses away from the Harrisons). This is the 30th ward, in the Lake township. In 1929, they lived at 6320 Normal Avenue and attended St. Bernard's Church.
Charles worked as a switchman for the railroad in Chicago. One night he was so drunk, he almost had both legs cut off from a train running over him.
Witnesses to the children's baptisms at St. Gabriel's were:
for Margaret - Anthony Dunn and Alice Harrison
for Helen - Patrick Donnelly and Margaret Harrison (Maggie McDevitt)
for James - Michael O'Toole and Mrs. Wallace
for Catherine - John Harrison and Loretta Gallagher
Katie led a troubled adulthood, having to put up with her husband Charlie's heavy drinking. Shortly after the last of her ten children were born, she was hospitalized for manic-depressive disorder. She was no longer able to care for her large family, so most of the children were sent to the orphanage in Des Plaines or put into foster homes until old enough for the orphanage. During the rest of her life, Katie was hospitalized 19 times for periods of a few months each. She died at age 70 during one of these hospitalizations, having fallen and breaking her hip, and then developing pneumonia. She is buried in St. Mary's Cemetery, West 87th Street and South Hamlin, in Evergreen Park, Illinois, 60642.
