Notes |
Married:
- Patrick Harrison was born in Ireland, and emigrated to the U.S. in 1850. His wife, Mary, was born in Canada to Irish parents, and her entire family came to the U.S. in 1838 when she was two years old. They settled in the Lake Forest area of Illinois, just north of Chicago.
Patrick Harrison seems to have speculated in land. All of his land purchases were in various sections of Wisconsin Township 11 - Range 5 west. The following listings, obtained from Crawford and Vernon County records, is incomplete:
01 Feb 1855 - Patrick received a land patent for Section 29 - T11 - R5W, 120 acres, the west half of the north east quarter AND the south east quarter of the north west quarter. This he sold to John Nilson on 13 Jul 1855 for $120.
23 Sep 1864 - Patrick bought from Michael and Mary Eliza Tully for $1000, Section 35 - T11 - R5W, 80 acres, the south half of the south west quarter. He sold this land back to Michael Tully on 10 Feb 1869 for $500.
26 Sep 1864 - Patrick bought from Thomas and Mary Melvin for $700, Section 35 - T11 - R5W, 80 acres, the west half of the south east quarter. This he sold back to Mary Melvin on 13 Feb 1865 for $650.
(unknown date) - Patrick bought Section 31 - T11 - R5W, the south west quarter of the north east quarter. He sold a small part of this (the 10 acres in the north east corner) to Peter German on 17 Mar 1866 for $100.
09 Nov 1867 - Patrick bought from Andrew A. and Christina Flathammer for $1050, Section 20 - T11 - R5W, 120 acres, the north half of the south east quarter AND the south west quarter of the south east quarter. The mortgage for this land was satisfied on 23 Oct 1871.
23 Oct 1871 - Patrick bought from Andrew and Betsy Call for $950, Section 21 - T11 - R5W, 80 acres, the east half of the north west quarter. Patrick took out a mortgage for $650 at this time, and this he satisfied on 15 Nov 1876.
By 1903, Patrick had acquired lands in Section 9 - T11 - R5W, 160 acres, the eastern half of the north west quarter AND the western half of the south east quarter (this seems to be where the family homestead was located ... at the NE junction of the Sag City and Birch Roads, sitting between West Prairie and Rising Sun) in Sterling Township. He also owned lands in Section 11 - T11 - R5W, 40 acres, the south west quarter of the south east quarter in Franklin Township, both in Vernon County. These lands he willed to his heirs upon his death in 1908.
Patrick's son Joseph ended up with the property, having bought out his siblings rights to it one by one. By 1931, Joseph sold off the eastern half of the north west quarter, but retained the western half of the south east quarter until his death in 1952.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Patrick was a farmer, as were his two sons, Patrick and Joseph.
In 1860, the family lived in Wisconsin's Crawford County, Freeman Township, with a post office in Rising Sun. By 1870, the family moved to Vernon County in Wisconsin, to Sterling Township, and remained there through 1900. At some time, probably after his wife's death in April, 1906, Patrick moved to Chicago and died there two years later. However, he and his wife are buried in Wisconsin.
According to the 1900 census, Patrick and Mary had had 13 children, 9 of whom were still alive in 1900. Patrick's Last Will and Testament, drawn up in 1903, only lists eight children: John, Alice White, Patrick, Mary, Anna Leyha (should be Leahy), Joseph, Richard, and Nellie (Helen). This indicates that Thomas, Katherine, Francis, and an unknown, probably died young. When the will went through probate in 1908, Alice White is not listed although she was still alive.
Family lore says that Mary Lavin claimed she was a member of DAR (Daughter of the American Revolution), and that her brother was killed in the Haymarket Riot of May 4, 1886 in Chicago. Neither of these are true.
The 1920 Wisconsin census lists three of the children as living on the family farm in Sterling Township: sons Joseph and Patrick, and daughter Mary Hill (a widow), and Mary's daughter Alice Hill.
Four of the children: Patrick, Mary, Joseph, and Richard, are buried with their mother and father in St. James Cemetery in Rising Sun, Crawford County, Wisconsin, where there is a large monument bearing the HARRISON name in front of the six grave markers.
