  • Notes  Married:
    • Carl took a homestead northwest of Washburn, WI, but he never built there. In 1917 he returned to Norway to marry one of his cousins. His original choice refused his offer, but anxious to travel to the U.S., Borghild, at 19 and the youngest of 12 children, was willing. They married in Norway in July, 1914, and travelled to the U.S. in 05 August, 1914.

Carl's promise of a farm turned out to be poor land on a hillside. They did not seem to live on the farm, but rather in Two Harbors.

In December or Janary, their bull got loose and Carl went chasing it. He died of a heart attack, leaving Borghild penniless and very pregnant. Their child, Ruth Holmen, was born sometime between April and September, 1915, either in Two Harbors, or at Superior, WI, where Borghild later made her living working as a housekeeper.

Ruth was boarded out while Borghild worked. Borghild was late making ayments, and the family taking care of Ruth seems to have taken the child in place of the payments. Ruth was never heard from again.
