  • Notes  Married:
    • The following account is mostly from Borghild Nilsdatter, the youngest child. According to the Borghild, Nils was born in Edisfos Werk. The 1875 and 1901 census list as Nils born in Hof parish (formerly called Hoff). Within Hof, there is a farm called Eidsfos Jernvaerk. Eidsfoss is about 20 miles south and slightly west of Drammen, in the Vestfold County, bordering on Buskerud County where this family settled. Nils was a carpenter (cabinet maker) and farmer.

      Nils and Maren raised their family on a farm called Gjermundrud in Konnerud, about 6 miles southwest of Drammen. In August, 1911, one of their sons painted a watercolor of their house and stable, called Braaten. Five of their children immigrated to the U.S: first Nils Christian when he was 17 (and changed his name to Christ Conrad), then Lars Johan (who didn't like it and returned to Norway), then Hans Peter, then Helene (with her husband Axel Brecke and two children) and finally Borghild.

      Borghild immigrated on August 5, 1914, with her husband, her first cousin, Carl Holman, settling at Two Harbors, MN. Carl Holman died by the end of 1914 of a heart attack when trying to chase his cow or bull that got loose. He left Borghild pregnant. She had a baby girl, Ruth, between April and September, 1915. Borghild moved to Superior, Wisconsin.

      Christ Conrad had six sons, and first settled at Two Harbors, MN, and then to Duluth. (One of Christ Conrad's sons or grandsons or maybe himself was an established artist in the U.S.) Helene was 74 years old when she died. Hans Peter and Lars Johan did not marry.

      Nils died at age 76 1/2 when Borghild was 14. Maren died when Borghild was 22 years old.
