  • Notes  Married:
    • Family knowledge is that the family spent some time in the coal mines in Pennsylvania. The health of father Timothy caused the family to move. Pension quest papers indicate that Timothy was not able to do much work. He had lung problems.

      James Finley Civil War pension papers information

      James was the son of Timothy and Mary O'Neil. James was killed in action on May 19, 1863. He is listed as a sergeant.His mother requested a Mother's pension on March 16, 1872. In the documents it states that James had helped support his parents before he left for the service and that he sent money home while he was in the service. It states that his father, Timothy, "is not able to do manual labor or has he been able to do enough to support himself or wife since about the year 1866 when he was taken with disease." It is signed in very nice handwriting by Mary Finley.

      There is once signed statement by John Finley of Prairie du Chien supporting the claim. Another supporting claim dated July 22, 1872, was made by Cornelius and Dennis Kane. In it they said Timothy's health had been bad for ten years, his land had been only partly cultivated and was
      not able to support the family, and they were in debt exceeding $200, partly to the Kanes; the Kanes had no interest in "the prosecutian of the clam of Mary Finley for pension." Another document made by
      Cornelius Kane and Peter Phelin stated they had known Timothy and Mary for the past twent years and testified that James had earned money and given it to his parents. James said "Pay the amount due me to my father he needs it more than I."

      In a document from the Crawford County Treasurer, Aaron Denio we learn about the property owned by Timothy. It has the location, the assessed value, and the years he owned it. It was the East 7/8 of the South half of the Northwest quarter of Section number 7, Town 110, North of Range N5 west for the years 1856 to 1861. Year and assessed value are as follows:
      1856 - $100; 1857 - $105; 1858 - $300; 1859 - $250; 1860 - $250; 1861 - $200.
      The document was dated December 31, 1872. In another document by Aaron Denio the Assessed value of real and personal property belonging to Timothy "as it appears on the tax rolls of the town of Freeman" is given. His land is the 70 acres of the S 1/3 of the NW quarter of Sec No. 7, T 10, R. 5 W. The valuations are from 1861 to 1875. The amounts given are: 1861 - $200 and then @00;
      110; 110; 72; 72; 175; 225; 200; 165; 140; 125; 100; 125; and 1875, 175. The two lowest valuations were for 1865 and 1866.

      After his wife Mary died, Timothy applied for the pension. He signed with an X. His appliction was made on April 7, 1879. He states his wife died on March 30, 1879. He signed his name on another document. That document was attested by James E. Campbell and by James Finley, residents of Prairie du Chien.

      Another document, dated November 29, 1879, made by James P. Finley and William McManus gives more information. They said Timothy had been in poor health for the past eighteen years. They believed Timothy could not have averaged mothe than $40 a year. Timothys earnings were from his
      farm and from his wife's pension. They indicated the farm "is a poor one and has been worked part of the time (during the past eighteen years) by his neighbors." They believe Timothy's income from that would not have exceeded $75 per year during that time.

      There may be more in the file. I did not ask for the complete file when I ordered it. Only certain papers are copied and sent in that case.

      Timothy and Mary had another son in the Civil War. Martin was married and had children. He moved to Iowa after farming for awhile in Grant County. Joyce Urban
