Dec 17 1822 Melancholy Accident by Fire – On Thursday evening last, Frances McLaughlin, aged 12 years, daughter of Dougall McLaughlin, white smith, of this city, had been out in the rain, and for the purpose of drying her clothes, had placed herself with her back to the fire, unfortunately so near to it, that it communicated with them, and in an instant she was enveloped in flame. The only person in the room with her at the time was a soldier of the Royal Veterans, who did all in his power to extinguish it; but this he did not accomplish, until she was so dreadfully burnt that she survived but till the following day. She was an interesting little girl, of a gentle disposition and religious habits, and she met her dissolution with resignation, exulting in the prospect of future happiness, an administering consolation to her afflicted parents. It is remarkable, that during her brief life, she had repeated hairbreadth escapes from death; one in particular, when she fell from a window in the second story of a house (Strabane Morning Post)
