FATAL ACCIDENT

A Gentleman in this town has received a letter from a friend, dated Londonderry, 18th July, which says –

“As Sir Andrew Ferguson, Bart. and his son Harvey, were returning home last night in a gig, about twelve o’clock at night, they came to a bridge, which the servant knowing to be very much broken, called to his master to stop a moment till he would lead the horse along it. Before the servant, however, had got hold of the reins, Sir Andrew whipped the horse, and in a moment the whole was precipitated over the bridge – Sir Andrew was killed on the spot where he fell; hut his son did not receive the smallest injury”.

Another letter of a subsequent date has the following particulars of this melancholy accident: “Sir Andrew’s death has given a great shock to the city and country too. He is universally lamented. He was rich and powerful, good-natured, affable, friendly, and innocent of any vice. – You have no idea of the general sensation of regret that so shocking a death occasioned: he fell the height of twenty feet, upon a rock; his head was bruised between two stones; his son fell on him, and was saved by a miracle”. (Belfast Commercial Chronicle)
