Benjamin Fenton was an apothecary in Strabane and also known as Doctor Fenton. He appears also to have been a wine merchant. He married Catherine McClintock. They had one son John Fenton who died in Dublin 1861 aged 85 years.

Abercorn Papers D623/A/40/24, 17 April 1772: Mr Fenton: I think very much the same sort of man; besides he is a Presbiterian and I told when it was reported we were to have soon the Hearts of Steell that he declared he would make them welcome, and would open his cellar for them; he is an appothecarry, and keeps a wine cellar.
Elected a Burgess of Strabane, D623/A/42/25, 3 June 1774: 'Mr Fenton is to be elected burgess tomorrow.'
Abercorn Papers D623/A/42/26, Benjamin Fenton, Strabane, to [Earl of Abercorn] 5 June 1774: 'Agreeable to your Lordship's recommendation I had yesterday the honour of being sworn a burgess for this Corporation, and for which I return your Lordship my most grateful thanks. Though I have succeeded to this unmerited, and unsolicited, yet I hope I shall never act inconsistent to your Lordship's interest in particular, and the welfare of this town in general ....'

1783 Subscriber's to Crawford's History of Ireland, 1783: Benjamin Fenton, Esq, Strabane - Considered for the role of Provost, Abercorn Papers D623/A/45/6 [January 1784?]: In course Mr Fenton should be our next Provost, I think he may do very well; I believe he is an honest man.
Turned it down because the salary was too small.
Abercorn Papers D623/A/47/13 John Sproule, Strabane, to [Earl of Abercorn] 1 July 1786: 'Sometime before the 24th June last, Mr James Hamilton applied to me and requested that I would be Provost for the ensuing year; I asked him why Mr Fenton would not serve the office as it was his turn in rotation; his answer was that Mr Fenton would not serve on account of the salary being too small

Abercorn Papers D623/A/93/18 (12 July 1801): The new burgesses I would venture to propose to your Lordship would be: Mr. John Fenton (the Doctor's only child) in room of Mr. Vallancy. Young Fenton will have the direction of all his father's interest, and the old fellow (a stiff Presbyterian) would vote both for Stewart and Lord Corry.

Sander's Newsletter 13 Feb 1804: Died in Strabane Benjamin Fenton, Esq aged 74 years.
