Derry in the Eighteenth Century

Extracted from the Delaware Gazette, August 21 1791

We whose names are hereunto subscribed, passengers in the ship St. James, from Londonderry to New-Castle, commanded by Capt. Van Luvenigh, take this opportunity in a public manner, of returning him our grateful thanks, for his humanity and attention to us. – Being convinced, that his attention, as a gentleman, his proper equality of behaviour to every passenger, and having also laid in plenty of the best kind of provisions, merit our warmest thanks. We wish, in a particular manner to mention his sympathetic tenderness to those on board who were sick (although of a small number) his persevering attention to them has been unprecedented, and exclusive of his professional talents, we believe him to possess the knowledge, rarely to he found in an individual.

And further, if Capt. Van Luvenigh should continue in the passenger trade, we earnestly request all our friends in Ireland, who mean to come to America, to give him the preference. To Sum up all, we are convinced he is a gentleman, a man of honour and humanity.

Too much cannot be said of Mr. Van Ransellor, the chief mate, for his assiduity & attention to the passengers, and his care in serving out the provisions, his spirited exertions in keeping down animosities which might arise amongst a mixed multitude, and his striving to render the passage as short and agreeable as possible.
