MOST DREADFUL SHIPWRECK.
Never have we had so heart-rending a duty to perform as that which a paragraph which we shall subjoin, from the Liverpool Guardian, now devolves upon us: -
It is to announce what will plunge many families throughout the country into the most poignant sorrow, namely, the loss of the ship Lady Sherbrooke, which sailed from this port with passengers early in June last, and which, it will be seen, was totally wrecked on the 19th July, in the River St. Lawrence, when lamentable to relate, only 32 persons were saves of a total of 273 who were on board……………
“The ship Lady Sherbrooke, H. Gambles, master, from Londonderry to Quebec, with passengers, was totally wrecked, on the 19th July, on the entrance of the gulph (sic) of St. Lawrence, having struck in a fog, at midnight, on Mouse island, near Point Blanche [likely refers to Rose Blanche, a historic community on the southwest coast of Newfoundland known for its unique lighthouse and scenic coastal scenery]. By this dreadful calamity not less than TWO HUNDRED AND FORTY-ONE lives have been lost! – The number of passengers embarked on board this ill-fated vessel amounted to 257, crew 16, total 273, of whom only 32 were saved. :-
