DEMONSTRATION AT CARRIGANS
LAYING OF FOUNDATION STONE OF MEMORIAL ORANGE HALL
The brethren of No. 3 (Raphoe) District L.O.L., under the jurisdiction of the City of Derry Grand Orange Lodge, held a most successful celebration of the anniversary of the Battle of the Boyne at Carrigans yesterday, and were favoured with good weather, on the whole, although a couple of showers fell during the day. This was the demonstration which the other brethren of the City of Derry Grand Orange Lodge originally intended attending. The Competent Military Authority while prohibiting processions in the city, granted permission for this demonstration, and while none of the city lodges took part, many of the brethren attended. The seven lodges (St. Johnston, Convoy, Manorcunningham, Newtowncunningham, Lifford, Carrigans and Raphoe) were strongly represented and formed an imposing procession.
A feature of the day’s proceedings was the laying of the foundation-stone of a new Orange Hall, in memory of the men of the district who made the supreme sacrifice.
Mr J. J. Glenn, of Prospect, in calling upon Mrs. T. F. Cooke, of Caw, to lay the foundation-stone, said that Mr Cooke was one of the largest employers of labour in the district and the building committee And Orange brethren thought it was only fitting that they should ask Mrs. Cooke to perform this ceremony.
Mrs. Cooke, who was enthusiastically received, then set the stone and declared it well and truly laid.
The stone bears the following inscription:- “This hall was erected in memory of our soldiers who fell in the great wat 1914-18. This foundation-stone was set by Mrs T. F. Cooke, 12th July 1920”
Br. W. J. Little, C.G.S., then read the names of the fallen as follows:
