Brunswick Clubs were formed by Protestants concerned at the implications of Catholic Emancipation which was granted in 1828
Extracted from the Belfast News Letter October 28 1828
On Monday, the 20th inst., a numerous and respectable meeting took place at New-Mills, for the purpose of establishing a Brunswick Club for the Parish of Tullyniskea (sic)
………..Fifth Resolution – Moved by John Irwine, Esq., “Resolved, that this Club be ruled by a President, Vice-Presidents, Secretary, Treasurer and Committee and the following Gentlemen be named as such:
That the Earl of Castlestuart, be requested to accept the office of President:
that the Hon. Andrew G. Stuart,
James Scott, Esq.
John Irwine, Esq.
Wm. Lowry, Esq.
John Stewart Murray, Esq.
and Rev. Robert Kingsmore, be Vice-Presidents;
and that the following Gentlemen form the Committee of Management:
Mr. James Young
Mr. Robert Young
Mr. John Henry
Mr. John Taylor
Mr. James McEntire, sen.
Mr. Ben. Howard
Mr. John Cunningham
