FROM AN ACCOUNT OF THE LANDS OF THE ARCHBISHOP OF ARMAGH, BY THOMAS ASHE, 1703

Extracted from the enormous Archbishopric of Armagh Estate, Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI), Belfast

The Archbishop of Armagh owned large tracts of land in Counties Tyrone, Londonderry, Armagh, Monaghan and Louth. With the exception of place names and personal names, spelling in this document has been modernised and punctuation has been inserted where it has been judged useful and relevant. Acreages are in Irish Plantation Measure [IPM]. One Irish acre equals 1.62 statute acres.

Pre1800 records comprise leases, rentals and surveys and a large collection of maps. Some records are in a fragile state and may be referred to using photocopies of the originals. The call numbers are catalogued DIO/4 passim

***A TRANSCRIPTION OF THE ORIGINAL DOCUMENT CONTAINING EARLY EIGHTEENTH CENTURY SPELLING FOLLOWS AT THE END OF THIS FILE**

TOWNLAND

OCCUPYING TENANTS AND DESCRIPTION OF TOWNLAND

Carredarra

This contains 194 acres IPM. WILLM. MCCOLLAN and JOHN BROWN who have each a farm house with a barn, stable, cow house and garden together with a corn and a tuck mill. About two thirds of this land is coarse arable and pasture ground. The other one third is better arable and pasture. There is upon this farm a great number of oaks which are large timber trees. Many of them are decayed and without bark. There are on it good meadows.

Ballemulle

This contains 150 acres 1 Rood and 24 perches IPM. DAVID ASPE, JOHN SLONE are tenants and have each a farm house with barns, stables, gardens and as above. And note with Slone an orchard and Aspe’s house is the better of the 2 and is built with stone and lime. On this is a great quantity of timber trees and as above. The land for the most part is good arable and pasture. Note on this the old walls of Desertlinn Church.

Murrascullen

This contains 219 acres 2 roods and 16 perches. SANDERS MCCANE and THOMAS WRIGHT are tenants, have each a small farm house with barns, stables etc. JOHN SLONE is also tenant. His house which lies by a small brook is now the worst of the three, but he is building new walls with design to improve. To his house belongs an orchard and a garden. This is good arable and pasture land and there are some good meadows all which are well enclosed.

Larra=Cormuck

This contains 149 acres 2 roods and 16 perches. JOSIA FLEMMING is tenant and has a good stone farm house with a barn, stable, cow house and garden. There is a good quantity of timber trees (all oak) upon this farm. It is coarse arable and pasture land. The tenant complains of the under tenant of Murrascullen that he, by giving leave to the miller of Moneymore (MR DAWSON’S land) to turn his watercourse upon his farm for which he pays 15 shillings per annum, overflows above 8 acres of his meadow. I sent to the tenant about it and believe care will be taken to prevent it but query.

All these town lands are bounded with the Society lands north east and south and with Lord Primate’s land in possession of SR ROBT STAPLES, west

Note These woods are called the woods of Desert Linn which I left in charge with JOSIA FLEMMING and DAVID ASPE and made them chief rangers and overseers of them until his Grace my Lord Primate’s pleasure was further known. They are looked upon to be very honest careful men. Therefore I reposed that trust in them and they have promised to discharge it faithfully.
