Lucas Family
John Lucas
In the year 1845 there came to the Township of Innisfil, [Simcoe Co, Ontario, Canada] a number of settlers from the north of Ireland. Among these was John Lucas with his wife (nee Rose Anne Sloan) and their six children, three sons and three daughters, the youngest (John) only six months old. Their family-owned land "Gray Stone" in Tyrone, near the town of Dungannon, but they felt the lure of broad acres of the new land.
They left Ireland for Canada in May and landed at Holland Landing in August, thence to Churchill. In the spring they moved to lot 18 Concession 5 Innisfil which was purchased from the Crown, and named it "Gray Stone Farm."
They found a home among the Dalhousie Settlers who had preceded them thirteen years. They also found a church home among their fellow Presbyterians. The church on the Penetanguishene Road at the sixth Concession line had been built the year before their arrival.
As the members of the family reached an age when they sought homes of their own, the second son Thomas, who married Anne Sharp, went to Sunnidale Township;
the eldest daughter Nancy, Mrs. M. McKinney, to Flos.
Others remained in Innisfil.
The youngest daughter, Isabella, Mrs. J. Beatty Long, and the second daughter Eliza Jane, became Mrs. Samuel Miller. William James Lucas married Mary Anne Page and farmed the homestead, also lot 18 Concession 4 Innisfil, which is Parkanore Farm, until his retirement. He died in 1916 aged 84 years, and his wife followed him in 1925 aged 72 years.
His sons John, Fred and Reuben added to their holdings until now the family own some five hundred acres bordering, on the fifth Concession Line of Innisfil.
Charles Lucas, son of John, and great-grandson of the original settler, has recently (1950) found natural gas on the land owned by some member of the family for nearly eighty years.
John Lucas, youngest son of the original settler, graduated as a teacher. He taught at Tyrone Corner in the old log school house. Later, after his marriage to Elizabeth Allan, he started to keep store in Churchill in 1869. He replaced his first old frame building with the fine brick block still serving as store and residence in Churchill. After some years he left Innisfil for Toronto.
