LEONARD FAMILY
William Leonard and his wife Ann MacLeish left Kildare Place [unable to locate in County Tyrone; however it does exist in Rathmines, a suburb of Dublin, Ireland] county Tyrone, Ireland, in 1831 to come to Canada by sailing vessel with their eldest son Robert a child one year old. They lived for a short time in New Brunswick, then crossed into New England states. Returning later for a short time in Quebec before moving to Scarborough [York Co., Ontario Canada] where they lived seven years.
They came to Innisfil Twp. in November 1853, spending their first night with Henry Mcconkey Con. 9, lot 19. Mr. Leonard bought the farm lot 23, con. 10 where a small shanty was erected for the family. This was Crown land bought for $700. A few years later he took up his original profession as the first teacher in Big Bay Point school. He rode back and forth each day on a white Indian pony which had learned to kneel down to let him mount.
Mr. and Mrs. William Leonard had four children: Robert, John, Margaret, and William. The eldest son Robert, a bachelor, remained on the home stead until his death in May 1923. He owned the bush at Lake Simcoe now know as Leonard's Beach.
John Leonard, the second son, lived on the S. E. ¼ lot 22, con. 10. He was a carpenter and barn framer by trade and left many landmarks to his credit. For the full payment of one barn he built he received three large clocks. Another son, William, farmed on the 11th Concession. Margaret, the only daughter of William Leonard Sr., married George Stott. He was a noted saw-miller and builder of his day. He built the Parsonage at Stroud, St. Peter's Church, Mount Pleasant school. He used to walk from Stroud to Mount Pleasant every week to pay his men. The Stotts later moved to Wyevale where he continued his trade for many years.
John S. Leonard, a son of John Leonard, was born 1871 and married Sarah Corbett 1895. He bought the homestead in 1923. Their family Meta (Mrs. W. Richardson), Fergusonvale; James S., Stroud; Fred and Minerva (Mrs. S. Thompson), Toronto, and Albert, Kapuskasing.
James S. Leonard married Annie Miller of Hillsdale, and still continues to farm on ..,. the homestead, specializing in Tamworths.
May the next hundred years see as many advances as the last hundred.
William Leonard married Ann MacLeish, children, Robert, John married Sarah Black, William, Margaret; children of John and Sarah, Mary Ann (deceased); Margaret Jane, married W. H. Martin (deceased); William James married Minnie Bowman, (deceased); John Shefflin married Sarah Corbett, (deceased); Addie married Lot Webb, (deceased); Matilda married Jack Hunter, children of John S. and Sarah, Meta, Jim married Annie Miller, Fred, Minerva, Albert.
