BLACKS

ln 1847, two brothers, James and John Black, and their two sisters, Isabella and Sarah, came from the town of Dungannon, in County Tyrone, Ireland, to make their home in Canada, settling in Innisfil Township, Simcoe County, Ontario, Canada

James Black settled on the south half of Lot 17, on the 9th Con., and married Mary Latimer, and their family were Robert, Sarah, William, Margaret, James and Johnston.

John Black lived on the south east quarter of lot 15, on the 6th Con. and married Mary Adams, and their family were Joseph, Elizabeth, John, Annie, Thomas, James E., Margaret and William.

Sarah Black married James Neely and their family were Robert, James, Annabella, Mary, Sarah, Alexander and Margaret.

In 1856, Innisfil became entitled to its first Deputy Reeve, and Mr. James Black was elected to the office, continuing 14 years as a member of the Township Council. Descendants of this pioneer family, now numbering hundreds, are scattered afar, taking their share of responsibilities as teachers, doctors, ministers, nurses, agriculturists, etc.

In June, 1924, the first annual reunion and picnic was organized and held in Innisfil Township's beautiful park, situated on the shore of Lake Simcoe. At the 1947 picnic, a blue spruce tree was planted in the park, marking the hundredth anniversary of the arrival of this family in Innisfil, and reverently dedicated to their memory. An interesting family tree has been made, with the names of the descendants from 1847 down to the present sixth generation.

And so, on this, our Township's centennial anniversary, we pay tribute to our ancestors, and to all those who, from pioneer days to the present tlme, have contributed their share in the development of one of Canada's finest rural municipalities, Innisfil Township. Let us endeavour to be worthy of the great heritage that has been left to us.

"God of our Fathers, be the God, Of their succeeding race."

"In Loving Memory of Our Forefathers"
