Monreagh Presbyterian Church
Monreagh Presbyterian Church was established in 1644 and is the oldest Presbyterian church in Donegal. Its first minister, Reverend Robert Cunningham, represented the Irish Presbyterians before the church of Scotland and the Parliament in London. His successor, in 1655, was the Reverend John Hart from Hamilton, Scotland. He was deposed by the second Bishop Leslie of Raphoe in 1661. In 1664 he was imprisoned in Lifford jail along with three other ministers and held for six years for refusing to accept the bishop’s primacy in religious affairs. The Monreagh Heritage Centre is based in the former manse.

MONREAGH: Taughboyne or Taboyne or Taboin

Monreagh if the oldest of the five congregations in the Laggan maintain a fine influence and usefulness to this date (1976). The first minister, Rev. Robert Cunningham, who was here in 1645, had been an Episcopal minister, but he was later chosen to lay the petition of Irish Presbyterians before the Church of Scotland, and, if necessary, to appear in Parliament in London to “obtain redress and to urge them to take steps to extend to Ulster the ecclesiastical reforms which they had already extended to England”. It was largely due to him that a supply of ministers was sent to the Laggan.
He was followed by the Rev. John Hart, who came from Hamilton, Scotland, in 1655. He was evidently a worthy man and Cromwell invited him to a conference in Dublin in 1658 to try to settle the ecclesiastical differences which the Protector found so rife in Ireland. Mr. Hart was deposed in 1661 by Leslie, Bishop of Raphoe. He was imprisoned in 1664 along with three others and held there for six years. He was still in Monreagh (Taboin) in 1685 and died in Jan. 1687.
In the following year, 1688, a call was made out to Mr. Leggatt of Dromore, but the next settled minister appears to have been Rev. Neil Gray of Clogher. He had been forced to go to Scotland in the troubles of 1688, but had certainly settled here at the end of 1689. In 1692 Clogher tried hard to persuade Synod to make him return to them, but on account of his age and infirmity he was allowed to remain at Taboin. His health declined and his son, William Gray was ordained as his assistant and successor on 18 Oct. 1699. The father died on 3 March 1715 and the son was suspended for having been irregularly married in 1711. He was disciplined by his presbytery and then restored to his charge. In 1721 he was appointed moderator of the General Synod and at the same time the congregation of Ushers’s Quay, Dublin, called him as their minister. Monreagh resisted the move but the Synod agreed to it and he went to Dublin in 1722 where he ministered to 1727. He then took part in the founding of St. Johnston congregation, Co. Donegal. He was prone to taking legal short cuts and for certain irregularities over all this he was deposed. He died on 23 Aug. 1730 and the new congregation was sanctioned by the General Synod in 1731.
The next minister in Monreagh was Rev. William Cornwall, son of Rev. Gabriel Cornwall, one of the early arrivals from Scotland, ordained in Bushmills in 1655. His son William had been ordained in Clogher and came here after two years on Casco Bay, U. S. A. He was installed here in 1722 and resigned in 1725, but does not seem to have held a charge after this. His name appears afterwards in the list of the Derry Presbytery for only two years. He was followed by Rev. William Boyd of Macosquin, installed on 25 Apr. 1725, and intense strife took place between the congregation and the new erection at St. Johnston. The Synod were often forced to intervene. Nevertheless a new meeting house was built in Mr. Boyd’s time before he died on 2 May 1772.
The congregation they called the Rev. Patrick Davison, a Scot, born in Morayshire. He was installed by the Route Presbytery on 9 Jan. 1776, and was an avowed Unitarian of Arian principles. The Monreagh (Taboin) people did not appreciate his New Light doctrine, and a considerable number left and founded the new congregation of Crossroad. Mr Davison resigned in Oct. 1786 and went to U. S. A. His successor was Mr. Moses Goorley (or Gourley) (lic. Derry 1785) who was ordained by the Derry Presbytery on 1 Nov. 1787. He also emigrated to the U. S. A., resigning here on 5 Aug. 1794. A long vacancy ensued before Mr. Matthew Heron (lic. Letterkenny 1798) was ordained on 2 June 1801, and his long ministry brought stability to the congregation. He retired in 1844 and obtained the help of an assistant and successor Mr. Andrew Long (lic. Derry) who was ordained on 24 July 1845. Mr. Heron died on 27 May 1846 and Mr. Long spent his entire ministry of 25 years here. He retired here on 21 Oct. 1869 and died on 2 May 1870. One of his daughters married Sir Robert Anderson of Belfast, and another was married to Mr. James Latimer an Ahorey man (lic. Armagh) who became her father’s successor here. He was ordained on 21 Oct. 1689, but only stayed four years before going to Chateau Ave. Church, St. Louis, U. S. A., and later to First Union Church, New York. He resigned here 24 Dec. 1783.
Then came Mr. William Thompson (lic. Glendermott) who was ordained on 27 May 1874 and who resigned on 7 Nov. 1882 and went to a charge in Scotland.
Yet another short ministry to be continued to America followed by Mr Hugh Cairns (lic. Comber) was ordained 12 Apr. 1883 and resigned on 4 June 1887. The Rev. Elijah McMordie of 2nd Newtownstewart was next installed on 5 Nov. 1887. He was known as a “good scholar, a humble Christian and his life was a confirmed and forcible commentary on his preaching”. He died here on 18 July 1899.
Another long ministry followed. Mr. William George Robinson (lic. Limavady) was the son of the Rev. C. C. Robinson of Ballykelly. He was ordained here 12 July 1900, retired on 30 Sept. 1944 and died on 8 Nov. 1953. He obtained the L. L. D. from the Royal University of Ireland in 1909. Mr. Samuel Malcolm McSparron (lic. Glendermott) succeeded the Rev. Dr. Robinson, being ordained 12 Jan. 1945.

The following are the names of the men who attended the meetings of the Laggan Presbytery representing Monreagh Congregation between the years 1672 and 1700, as ruling elders or as commissioners, together with the names of the congregations which they represented. They were doubtless the leading men in the districts in which they lived, and their names deserve to be held in remembrance on account of the part which they took in laying the foundations of Presbyterianism in the Laggan, and for the services which they so cheerfully rendered, without fee or reward, amid much persecution and many difficulties, in maintaining a preached gospel in troublous times. In all of these congregations there are still to be found families bearing their honoured names, and in many cases they are, no doubt, the descendants of these good men – a fact they have no reason to be ashamed, but good reason to be proud of.

| May 25 1870 | DEATH OF THE REV. ANDREW LONG – It is with much regret that we record to-day the death of the Rev. Andrew Long, the much-beloved and respected Presbyterian Minister of Monreagh. For several years, Mr. Long has been incapacitated by loss of health and physical weakness, for discharging the active duties of his office; but although unable to occupy the pulpit on the Sabbath or to visit the families of his congregation as frequently as he was wont to do in previous years, still his affectionate interest in them and deep solicitude for their temporal and spiritual welfare remained unabated to the last. He was ordained by the Presbytery of Derry to the pastoral charge of the Monreagh congregation on the 24th of July 1845, and had thus almost completed the 25th year of his ministry. He discharged his duty to the people entrusted to his care with exemplary diligence and faithfulness. Of him it may be truly said “He wearied not in well-doing”……….he was unremitting in the discharge of his pastoral duties, visiting the sick, catechising the young, organising and superintending the Sunday school…………During the revival in 1859 Mr. Long was distinguished for his earnestness and abundance of his labours for the spiritual well-being of his flock……….The congregation of Monreagh, at the time of his appointment, was not in a healthy or prosperous condition; but, under his active and faithful superintendence, it soon began to exhibit symptoms of new life and energy. Many poor families who had been living in the neglect of religious ordinances, became regular and interested attendants on public worship. The congregation steadily increased, the scattered members were collected, and the church, which at the date of his ordination presented a somewhat dilapidated appearance, was thoroughly repaired at considerable expense, and is now a very neat and comfortable house of worship. An excellent school-house, with suitable residence for the teacher, erected mainly through his instrumentality, remains to testify his zeal and successful efforts to advance the educational and religious interests of his people…………….He leave a wife and eight children to mourn his loss – the loss of a kind husband and of a pious , affectionate and indulgent father (Londonderry Sentinel) |

PRESBYTERY OF DERRY – CALL TO THE REV. JAMES LATIMER The Clerk read a call to this minister from the congregation of Chouteau-avenue, St. Louis, United States, offering two thousand dollars per annum of income, paid quarterly. The call was handed to Mr. Latimer, and a commission of Presbytery was appointed to meet in Derry on that day fortnight to consider the call. Rev. Mr. Latimer reported that during his late visit to America he had raised 2,415 dollars, or £514 16s, toward the erection of the manse at Monreagh, which, in addition to £80 raised at home, made £514 16s, and making deductions for expenses, the sum of £307 11s 7d was now accruing to the congregation for the erection of a manse. | Oct 27 1892 | DEATH OF MR. THOMAS ELDER, CARRIGANS – The intelligence of the death of this esteemed gentleman, which took place at Carrigans on Tuesday afternoon, will be learned with regret. He had been in delicate health for a considerable time, and spent the months of July and August at Buncrana, but he derived little, if any, advantage from the visit, and was almost constantly confined to his house after his return up to the time of his death, which was due to heart disease. The deceased was one of the most genial of men, and was well known and esteemed in the district. He came to Carrigans in 1845 from the neighbourhood of Malin, in which Presbyterian Church his father was a ruling elder, and also conducted the psalmody. He was brother to the late Hon. William Elder, a member of the New Brunswick legislature. He was very highly respected by all denominations, and was a man who took a great interest in promoting everything that was for the good of the Church, to which he was greatly attached. | Oct 2 1896 | FUNERAL OF THE LATE MR. JOHN WHYTE, ST. JOHNSTON – On Wednesday morning last at eleven o’clock the remains of the above gentleman were removed from his father’s residence for interment in the family burying ground, Monreagh. The funeral cortege was the largest seen in the district for a number of years, and many were the expressions of regret at the early demise of one who, by his quiet and unassuming disposition made for himself hosts of friends. The chief mourners were – Mr. John Whyte (father), and Messrs. Wm. J. Whyte and Robert Whyte, of Raphoe (brothers). The Revs. F. Chambers and J. C. Wallace conducted the funeral service. | Jul 22 1899 | FUNERAL OF THE REV. ELIJAH MCMORDIE, M. A. – On Thursday the funeral of the late Rev. E. McMordie, took place at Monreagh, the remains being interred in the burying-ground close to the church. A short service was conducted in the manse by the Rev. W. J. Lowe and Rev. Dr. Henry. The remains were then carried into the church, where the Rev. James Camac, Moderator of the Derry Presbytery, gave out portion of the 90th Psalm, and read from I Cor. xv., and offered up prayer. The coffin was then carried out of the church to the graveside. The chief mourners were: - Rev. W. McMordie (Kilkeel [Co. Down]), Mr. D. McMordie (Rademon, county Down), Mr. J. A. McMordie (Belfast), brothers of the deceased; Messrs. J. G. R. Porter, J. P., (Omagh), A. T. Porter, (Derry), and R. R. Porter (Ballymena), brothers-in-law. Derry Presbytery was represented by Rev. John Camac, Rev. Dr. Henry, Rev. George Moody, Rev. John Huey, Rev. Dr. Stuart, Rev. Joseph McCorkell, Rev. W. J. Lowe, Rev. D. G. Millar, Rev. R. W. Ross, and Rev. Leslie Rankin. | Sep 10 1900 | FUNERAL OF THE LATE MISS RUTHERFORD, ARDAGH, ST. JOHNSTON In accordance with announcement in your obituary column on Wednesday last, the mortal remains of the much-esteemed and respected young lady were removed on Thursday from her father’s residence, Ardagh, St. Johnston, for interment in the family burying-ground, Monreagh. A very large concourse of the residents of the locality, of all classes, followed the remains to their last resting place, testifying to the esteem in which deceased was held. Naturally of a quiet and gentle disposition, she had endeared herself to all who had the privilege of her acquaintance, and her early removal has occasioned profound general regret. Miss Rutherford had just completed her five years’ course as monitress in Ardagh National School under her father and mother, who have been the recipients of a large number of letters of condolence and sympathy from their numerous friends. The chief mourners were: James Rutherford, father of the deceased; David Rutherford, grandfather; David, James, William and Henry Rutherford, brothers; Messrs. Andrew, Henry and David Rutherford; William McCloskey, Coleraine; Henry Allen, Garshuey; and Robert Smith, St. Johnston, uncles. The coffin was covered with beautiful wreaths from the following: - Father and mother, uncle Henry and aunt Sarah, uncle David and aunt Lizzie, Miss McDonald, Londonderry, deceased’s music teacher and friend, the Misses Agnes and Martha Smyth, Killenan; Mrs. Hugh McMonagle, Londonderry, Miss Hyndman, Trenta House, and Miss Stephenson, Ardagh, two of deceased‘s pupils. Previous to the removal of the remains from the house to the hearse in waiting, Rev. W. G. Robinson, minister of Monreagh Presbyterian Church, to which congregation the deceased young lady belonged, conducted a short service, reading suitable selections of Scripture, and having briefly commented on the same, offered up prayer. | Mar 24 1902 | FUNERAL OF MRS SMYTH, ST JOHNSTON – The funeral of this much-esteemed lad, who has been removed at a comparatively early age, took place last Thursday afternoon, when a very large and respectable cortege, representative of all classes in the community, followed the remains to their last resting place, in the family burying-ground at Monreagh. Previous to the coffin containing the corpse being removed to the hearse in waiting, Rev. Francis Chambers, minister of St. Johnston Presbyterian Church, who was most assiduous and constant in his attendance on deceased during her last illness, conducted a short service in the house. The remains were afterwards removed, and on arriving at the Cemetery gate were borne to the graveside on the shoulders of the deceased’s brothers, Messrs. James Rutherford, N. T. Ardagh, and Henry Rutherford, Derry, her brother-in-law, Mr. Smyth, Plumbridge [Co. Tyrone], and her nephew Mr. Henry Allen, jun., Garshuey. The coffin, which bore the inscription “Jane Smyth died March 18, 1902, aged 34 years”, was lowered and the grave closed over all that was mortal of Jane Smyth, who was an affectionate wife and mother, a good neighbour, and a kind friend to all with whom she came in contact. | Sep 16 1903 | DEATH OF MR HENRY ALLEN, GARSHUEY Very many of your readers will learn with much regret of the death of Mr. Henry Allen, retired National School teacher, at Garshuey, as recorded in your obituary column to-day. The sad event occurred on Monday morning at his residence, after a brief illness, during which he was nursed by his wife and daughter, his sister, Mrs. McCready, Desertmartin [Co. Londonderry], and his sister-in-law, Mrs. Henry Rutherford, Garshuey. The late Mr. Allen was a native of Tobbermore, county Derry, and conducted a school there at a place name Killynumber, coming to county Donegal in the year 1853, at the instance of the late Rev. Andrew Long, minister of Monreagh Presbyterian Church, who had just gathered together the nucleus of National school at the place of which Mr. Allen afterwards became the first teacher. Under his tuition, the school grew and flourished, scholars attending from the neighbouring villages of Carrigans and St. Johnston and the country about. Very important walks of life at home and abroad and include clergymen, doctors, magistrates, solicitors, teachers, commercial men and all the principal farmers of the locality. Mr. Allen taught school in Monreagh under no less than five managers – Andrew Long, James Latimer, Wm. Thompson, Hugh Cairns, and Elijah McMordie – successive ministers of the Presbyterian church, and fulfilling his duties as secular instructor with conspicuous ability and conscientious dedication. Mr. Allen retired on a well-earned pension in the year 1892, since which time he has lived quietly in comparative seclusion at Garshuey, near Londonderry, surrounded by his family and friends, The sympathy of the community will go out the his wife and daughter and other relatives, and to his two sons, John and Henry, who are at business in Londonderry. ALEXANDER MOTHERWELL – The funeral of the late Mr. Alexander Motherwell, Monglass, took place on Tuesday, when the remains were conveyed from deceased’s late residence for interment in Monreagh burying ground. Rev. W. G. Robinson, B. A., of Monreagh Presbyterian Church, of which deceased was a member, conducted a service at Monglass, and in touching terms referred to the late Mr. Motherwell. The remains were followed to the burying-ground by many of the deceased’s friends in Londonderry and throughout a wide area, there being over a hundred vehicles in the funeral cortege. Rev. John McClean, Crossroads Presbyterian Church conducted the service at the graveside. Many beautiful wreaths from relatives and friends were place on the grave. The chief mourners were: - Messrs. A., were removed from 74, Great James-street, Londonderry, on Saturday for interment at Monreagh. A short service was conducted at the house by Rev. James Thompson, B. D., Great James-street Presbyterian Church, and Rev. Andrew Macafee, First Omagh. The remains were followed by a large concourse of mourners), while the people of Monreagh turned out in large numbers to pay their last respects to the memory of the deceased. The service at the graveside was conducted by Rev. James Thompson, Rev. James McGranahan, First Derry, and Rev. W. G. Robinson, Monreagh. The other clergymen present, in addition to those mentioned, were the Venerable Archdeacon Molloy and Rev. Francis Chambers, St. Johnston. Rev. Mr. Thompson, in the course of an address at the graveside, said in Londonderry they knew Mrs McMordie as a regular attender at public worship, as one who gave liberally of her means for the furtherance of the work of God, and one deeply interested in the cause of temperance, and indeed every good cause. She undertook the charge of a Bible class, which she taught very efficiently. Her long experience, her fine intelligence, her devout mind, and the facility with which she could express her ideas, made her a successful and influential teacher…………….A memorial service was conducted in Great James-street Presbyterian Church on Sunday forenoon by Rev.
