The congregation, originally called Derriloran, may be said to have begun with the ordination of Mr. JOHN McKENZIE in the summer of 1673. He was in the City of Derry during the Seige (1688-9) and wrote an account about it. There was difficulty in raising an adequate stipend – they could not raise more than £15 and the Synod suggested a union with Moneymore. Whether it came about is uncertain, but it is clear that Mr. McKenzie remained here till his death which is supposed to have taken place in 1696, aged 49 years.

The first meeting house was in the old town of Cookstown until 1701 when it was pulled down by the rector, but Mrs MARGARET STEWART of Killymoon, at her own expense, built a new church which was in use until 1764

The following surviving early records for First Cookstown Presbyterian Church have been microfilmed by the staff of PRONI, Belfast, where they may be consulted: Baptisms, 1836-1950; Marriages, 1820-8 (possibly 1st) and 1845-88 MIC 1P/43, 139; MIC 1P/460

The condition of the original marriage records, a degree of difficulty in discerning the handwriting and quality of filming make transcription challenging and wherever possible the Derryloran tithe applotment book (1826) and Griffiths Valuation (c1860), Index to Townlands and Towns, Parishes and Baronies in Ireland (1851) and Heather, Peat and Stone - O’Kane, have been consulted for confirmation of families and townland addresses. Original spelling has been retained.
