The CATHOLIC RENT was a subscription that was paid monthly to the CATHOLIC ASSOCIATION in Ireland. It amount to one penny per month. This was a tactic used by Daniel O’Connell to raise money for his campaign to gain Catholic emancipation i.e. the right of Catholics to sit in Parliament at Westminster.

MY LORD - Having observed, with serious anxiety, the great irritation and alarm which has been produced by the levy of an impost, called THE CATHOLIC RENT, and by other proceedings of a Body, styling itself, THE CATHOLIC ASSOCIATION
We, the undersigned, request, that your Lordship, as Governor of the County of Tyrone, will, in the absence of the Sheriff, call a meeting of the Nobility, Gentry, Clergy, and Freeholders thereof, for the purpose of Petitioning Parliament, for the adoption of such measures as may protect this Country from the imminent dangers to which it is exposed, by the influence of that unconstitutional Body.
