BALLYGAWLEY. – On Sunday last, the new Presbyterian Church of Ballygawley, of which the Rev. D. G.Smyth is pastor, was opened for public worship. The building has been erected by Messrs. Todd, Belfast, and reflects great credit o£ that firm, the cost being almost £1,100. The stone principally used in the construction is limestone. The pews are all of pitch pine and varnished. A gallery runs along the south side of the church, it being also pitch pine and varnished. The ceiling is also of the same wood and set in an ornamental manner, which greatly enhances the beauty of the church. A considerable amount of taste has been displayed on the pulpit, it being of the same wood and richly ornamented. It is approached on either side by steps guarded by balustrades. There are two splendid circular stain-coloured windows on the north and south sides of the church, the windows below also of stained glass. The church is capable of holding 600 persons, and is heated by Musgrave’s patent heating apparatus. Great credit is due to the pastor and members of the church in having erected such a splendid edifice. Already £800 has been subscribed by the people of Ballygawley, and we trust their friends and sympathisers will help them clears off the debt entirely……………..
The service was announced to be held at twelve o’clock, but long before that time the spacious building was filled. The Rev. W. Madill, D.D., ex-Moderator of Assembly conducted the service. The following gentlemen acted as collectors, viz –
Colonel Dean Mann
C. Moutray, Esq.
Mervyn Moutray, Esq.
Capt. Moutray
Edmond Moutray, Esq.
John Givan, Esq., solicitor
Dr. Warnock
Dr. McMaster
The amount realised was considerable.
