The site of a medieval monastery, Old Leckpatrick Burying Ground is located in Leckpatrick townland, approx. five kilometres north of Strabane and twelve kilometres south of Londonderry at the junction of Victoria Road and Ballyheather Road near Ballymagorry in the parish of Leckpatrick.
St. Patrick is believed to have founded a church here sometime after 450 A.D., Leckpatrick translating as the flat stone of Patrick.
The picturesque graveyard is surrounded by a fieldstone wall, and in one corner are the remains of an old schoolhouse and sexton’s shed.
Entry is via a single gate and one is immediately confronted by a steep incline which is actually a large mound in the centre of the graveyard indicating that graves have been “topped up” by sextons over the centuries. Leckpatrick, like others within the former Strabane District Council jurisdiction, was closed in the 1920s as hazardous to public health.
Within the graveyard is a small disused chapel known as the “Abercorn Vault” which was used by the Hamiltons of Mountcastle and Castle Street, Strabane, prior to the construction of the mansion Baronscourt in Ardstraw parish.
Another notable family of the parish were the Sinclair family of Holly Hill [Holyhill, Holy Hill, etc.] and Bonnyglen, Co. Donegal, who maintained a separate graveyard with access from Victoria Road, known as the “Sinclair Corner”.
The first recorded burial is that of John Mag(h)ee in 1617 and the last family to retain burial rights was the Arbuckle family of Woodend and Strabane, the final interment taking place in 2005.
The graveyard was surveyed in Griffiths Valuation (1858) as measuring 0a.3r.20p in area, with an annual valuation of fifteen shillings.
Unfortunately, the early registers of baptisms, marriages and burials of Leckpatrick Parish Church (St. Patrick’s Church of Ireland) had been deposited in the old Public Record Office, Dublin, where they were destroyed in 1922.
Leckpatrick parish enters the town of Strabane from the north and many old Strabane families lie at rest here; Arbuckle, Bonner, Campbell, Donnell, Gordon, Hannah and Ross.
The following families found in the graveyard are recorded in the 1631 Abercorn Muster Rolls for the Manor of Cloghogal (Leckpatrick Parish) and the Men and Armes of the Town of Strabane: Arbuckle, Barr, Boyd, Brown, Forbes, Gordon, Gourley, Hamilton, Hannah, Knox, Patterson, Pollock and Purdon.
A survey of the graveyard was undertaken by Sheelagh & David Todd in 1991; they recorded all legible headstone inscriptions and published same in the long out of print “Register of Gravestone Inscriptions in Leckpatrick Old Burial Ground, Artigarvan, Strabane”

| February 25 1865 | THE LATE CAPTAIN SINCLAIR. – This respected gentleman died the other day at his residence, Holyhill, near Strabane. He was ninety-four years of age. The North-West Farming Society owed its establishment in 1821 to Captain Sinclair, who is said to be the first projector of it, and by his exertions and respect in which he was held, he succeeded in getting a number of patriotic gentlemen to co-operate with him in bringing it into active and useful operation. He also took an active part in the formation of the Strabane Farming Society, in which he always manifested a lively interest, one of the chief objects of his life evidently to promote agricultural improvement, upon which the prosperity of the country so much depends. The immense concourse of persons of every rank and denomination who accompanied his remains to the place of interment in Leckpatrick churchyard, on Tuesday last, bore ample testimony to the respect in which he was held by the inhabitants of Strabane and the surrounding neighbourhood (Londonderry Journal) |

| March 23 1872 | FUNERAL OF THE LATE WILLIAM L. ROSS, STRABANE. – On Monday last, the remains of this lamented young gentleman were interred in the family burying-ground, Leckpatrick. Mr. Ross, being connected with the Masonic body, and having, shortly before his death, expressed a desire to be buried in accordance with Masonic usage, Freemasons from various lodges, viz. Derry, Raphoe, Newtownstewart, Lifford and Strabane – joined the funeral cortege, and wearing their regalia of office, followed the remains of the deceased to their last resting-place. | April 9 1875 | SOLDIER’S FUNERAL AT LECKPATRICK. – On Wednesday the remains of Colour-Sergeant Samuel Key, of the staff of the P. W. O. Donegal Militia, were interred in the Leckpatrick Graveyard with military honours. The hearse carrying the body left Lifford, and passed through Strabane about noon, accompanied by an excellent band of the regiment playing the “Dead March in Saul” and proceeded to the old graveyard of Leckpatrick. On Sunday, the remains of John Cooke were removed from his late residence, Bridge-end, for interment in Leckpatrick Graveyard, amid a remarkable demonstration of popular sympathy. Not for many years has there been witnessed such a large and representative funeral in Strabane. All creeds and classes joined in the tribute of respect to the memory of one who had so gallantly sacrificed his life in the effort to save the life of a fellow townsman. The Rev. A. H. | December 16 1910 | McFARLAND. NONAGENARIAN’S DEATH. – The funeral took place on Tuesday, 13th inst. of a nonagenarian named Andrew McFarland, aged 93 years, from his residence at Ballyheather, Donemana, to Leckpatrick burying-ground, attended by a large concourse of people. Deceased is survived by a sister whose age is different by a few years. He has lived under six sovereigns of Great Britain, being born in 1817, in the reign of George III., and four years before the death of Napoleon Bonaparte. He used to account with great vividness exciting tales which he heard in his youth in connection with the Irish Rebellion in 1798, as his ancestors played an important part in that rising. Events centred in the Crimean War in his own life were often retold to the present generation with wonderful familiarity. | May 6 1919 | CUMMINGS. FUNERAL OF A TYRONE ORANGEMAN. – The remains of Mr. John Cummings, one of the oldest Orangemen in Tyrone, were removed from Woodend, Strabane, on Saturday, for interment in Leckpatrick burying-ground, amid many indications of deep regret. As the deceased was the District Master of Strabane L. O. L. for a period of sixty years, the brethren of the Orange and Black Institutions attended in large numbers to pay a tribute of respect to his memory. In the procession were representatives of the County Tyrone Orange Lodge and also representatives of the Black Chapter. The lodges taking part were – Strabane, Leckpatrick, Barron, Donemana, Killycurry, Magheramason, Sion Mills, Douglasbridge and Lifford. Prior to the removal of the remains, a service was conducted by the Rev. J. Morrison, of Artigarvan Presbyterian Church, after which the coffin was borne by Brs. John Adams, John McCorkell, Stephen S. Stevenson, and Robert Moore through a cordon of the brethren, wearing their regalia, with mourning badges. The brethren afterwards formed four deep and marched to the churchyard. The coffin was covered with the flag of Leckpatrick Lodge No. 251, of which deceased was a member. At the graveside Br. Rev. J. Gatchell, Donemana, paid a tribute to deceased’s qualities and the work he performed for the Institution. His loss would be much felt, and his place would not be easily filled.
