Census of the Parish of Desertcreat, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland 1834

Partial: Five Townlands Only
PRONI T/1378
Transcribed by Bruce Briers

This is a source that I came across at PRONI and I have not seen it listed on any website anywhere.

It lists Heads of Households only but lists the number of occupants of the household, their religion and sex. It does not list children under a certain age but what the age cut-off was I don't know.

Despite the shortcomings it can be a valuable guide to people seeking ancestors in the Parish of Desertcreat during a period from which very few records survive. I only transcribed some of the details of the townlands where I thought my Bryars surname would be mentioned, which was 3 only and it is noticeable that local townland names were used and they do not match the Tithe Applotment Books or Griffith's Valuation townland names. In addition to the Annagh Johnston and Annagh Quinn that I partly transcribed there was also an Annagh Ferguson and an Annagh Leslie and I have shown some notes on those that may be of interest.

Abbreviations - C.I. = Church of Ireland
R.C. = Roman Catholic
Presb. = Presbyterian
Sec. = Seceders

Explanation - Seceders were congregations that split from the Presbyterian Church during the Reformation. In Northern Ireland they formed their own Secession Synod but in 1840 they re-united with the Presbyterian Synod of Ulster to form the Supreme Court of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland that exists today.
